Proctology Clinic in the Luitpoldblock

Specializing in proctology in Munich since 2013

Dr. Hofer and Liebl: Modern Treatment and Personalized Care—in a Unique Location in the Historic Luitpoldblock

Located in the heart of the Brienner Quarter, right on Odeonsplatz, our specialized proctology practice is led by Dr. Bernhard Hofer and Florian Liebl, specialists in visceral surgery and proctology. In the venerable premises of the Luitpoldblock, we combine many years of experience with modern diagnostic techniques and minimally invasive surgical procedures, including laser surgery for hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and tailbone cysts (sinus pilonidalis).

Many people find it difficult to talk about symptoms affecting such a sensitive and intimate area of the body. That’s why discretion, trust, and empathy are just as important to us as medical expertise. We take the time to examine you thoroughly, explain our findings in clear and understandable terms, and work with you to determine the treatment that best suits your individual needs.

Our mission is to provide specialized proctological care in a calm and reassuring environment—as gentle as possible and as effective as necessary.

Florian Liebl earned his certification as a visceral surgeon (1) at the Klinikum rechts der Isar and the Klinikum Bogenhausen in Munich. As a student of Prof. Dr. Iesalnieks, he expands our range of services to include the Karydakis procedure for recurrent pilonidal sinus and the LIFT procedure for anal fistulas. Prof. Iesalnieks is recognized for his numerous publications on tailbone cysts, serves on the guidelines committee, and—after positions in Regensburg, Gelsenkirchen, and Munich—currently heads a clinic in Cologne as chief physician.

Dr. Bernhard Hofer completed his surgical residency in Munich, Mainz, and Starnberg and specialized in visceral surgery in Dachau. He completed his proctology training under Prof. Dr. Hager in Kronach, passing the examination administered by the State Medical Board. Prof. Hager (†) was a co-founder of the German Society for Coloproctology and editor of the journal “coloproctology” published by Springer, and he had a lasting influence on the field of proctology (2) in Germany.

We are both members of the Professional Association of Coloproctologists in Germany and the German Society for Coloproctology, which allows us to stay abreast of developments in our field through professional exchange.

(1) Visceral surgery (from Latin viscera = internal organs): surgery of the abdominal organs, the thyroid gland, the abdominal wall, and the soft tissues of the body surface

(2) Proctology (from Ancient Greek proktós = anus, tailbone): the study of diseases of the rectum. Since the 2004 regulations on continuing medical education, this has been an official subspecialty designation requiring structured training and an examination administered by the State Medical Board.

Our specialization is also reflected in our current treatment statistics: conditions affecting the anal and rectal regions account for an exceptionally high proportion of our daily work. In 2025, hemorrhoids were documented in 49.9% of our treatment cases, and pilonidal disease (tailbone cyst) in 29.1%. Anal fissures are also among the conditions we treat most frequently. For our patients, this high number of cases means one thing above all else: experience and expertise in dealing with conditions that people are often reluctant to discuss.

Our practice is located in the center of Munich at Brienner Straße 13, right on Odeonsplatz and above Café Luitpold. We treat patients with both public and private insurance and are licensed to perform outpatient surgeries.

Together with a staff specialist, 2 medical assistants, 2 administrative practice assistants, and a licensed nurse, we treat approximately 5,000 patients annually, with 10,000 doctor-patient interactions (male:female = 61% : 39%). You benefit from this experience through experienced and seamless care.

Innovative and well-established

After 20 years of clinical practice, I took the step toward establishing my own practice in 2013 and fulfilled my dream of having my own clinic. My motivation has always been—and continues to be—to offer the best possible treatment for coccygeal fistulas and hemorrhoids. We never rest on our laurels but are constantly looking for ways to improve. For example, I have adapted the surgical strategy used in minimally invasive thyroid surgery to the treatment of tailbone cysts and incorporated videoendoscopy from arthroscopic joint surgery. We found particularly precise instruments among our colleagues in otolaryngology and dentistry. Constant study of the professional literature provides the necessary input for new ideas. Despite our enthusiasm for progress, we never lose sight of established techniques. In the treatment of chronic anal fissures and anal fistulas, no newer procedure has yet come close to conventional excision in terms of success rates. However, even in these surgeries, lasers and surgical magnifying glasses ensure improved precision. Our surgeries take place at our practice and at the Iatros Clinic (outpatient surgical center). Regarding hygiene, we receive guidance and are regularly audited by hospital hygienists and hygiene specialists from the German Advisory Center for Hygiene (BZH). We’re always happy to answer your questions and will do our best to offer you a suitable appointment, even when our schedule is full. For patients who do not live in the Munich area, we offer a follow-up care service via email or messenger (ArztDirekt®) after treatment is complete.

Munich, the State Capital—Always Worth a Visit

Munich Photo Gallery

Munich is always worth a visit—even if the initial reason is medical. Especially for patients from countries with long wait times for surgery, such as the United Kingdom, or very high treatment costs, such as in the United States, receiving treatment in Munich can be an attractive alternative. Here, modern and specialized surgery for a tailbone cyst can be combined with a stay in one of Europe’s most beautiful and livable cities. This allows international patients to receive high-quality medical care and use the trip—depending on the schedule, either before or after the procedure—to explore Munich and its surroundings. Even when travel and accommodation are included, the total costs are often significantly lower than those of comparable self-pay treatment in some home countries.
